Volunteer Referee Point System

The following volunteer referee point system is in effect for the Fall 2009 season in Laguna Beach, Region 86.   See notes below table.

U5/U6
(K-League):
Point system not applicable.

U8 (Under 8): 1 referee per game
2 points per game officiated (Adult referees must assign points earned refereeing U8 games to a U8 team)
10 points per team required  for team to receive trophies plus one bonus game in November

U10, U12, U14, U16: 1 referee and 2 assistant referees per game

Points per game officiated: 2 as Referee, 1 as Assistant Referee (AR)

12 points per team required to qualify for post-season tournament*

U19 (Under 19): Point system not applicable.

The required points may be adjusted based on total number of actual regular season weeks due to rain-out or game cancellations.
   *The actual formula for required referee points = 4 * ( # of games/2 - 1);  example: 8 scheduled games equates to 4 * ( 8/2 - 1)  = 12 points

AYSO is an all-volunteer organization and therefore relies on volunteers for the successful implementation of its program. This point system is designed to encourage volunteer participation and ensure that games have sufficient referee coverage. Without referees there can be no games! And without games, there can be no program!  We are all in this together.  It is our hope that each team will provide, at a minimum, one Referee at the U8 level and two Referees at the higher levels (U10 and above).

For a team to receive volunteer referee points:

  • Points are awarded to the team that the volunteer represents.
  • A volunteer may represent any team and/or multiple teams.
  • Adult refeees may only assign points doing U8 games to U8 teams
  • Youth referees may assign points earned doing any game to any team
  • Each Referee must be scheduled through the on-line scheduling system prior to the game being played
  • Referee must wear proper uniform with badge
  • Referee must be training and certified
  • Line-up cards with names of Referee and ARs must be turned in to Referee Administrator
  • Referees must allocate points to the team they represent via the on-line scheduling system so that accumulated referee points appear weekly under team standings.
  • A Referee may officiate his/her own child's game for U8 play only, although this is discouraged.
  • A Referee may NOT officiate his/her own child's game in U10 and above.  If no referee shows up, then with the permission of the coaches, he/she may officiate his/her own child's game and receive credit by signing up after the game or as soon thereafter as possible or by reporting to the Referee Administrator.   If there is not agreement between the coaches, then he/she may not officiate.  If there is no referee, the game should not be played.
  • We encourage Referee's to officiate in divisions other than their own if also a Coach in that division.

Be a Referee!  It’s fun! You get the best seat in the house.  No experience necessary!  We provide all the training you’ll need to be successful.  Please see the Referee training schedule.
